“A Soulfully Nerdy Experience” By Nicole Isaac
There is only one word that can describe what happened when I witnessed Kenny Wesley performing and it is “Dynamic”. I can honestly say by definition he is that word. With a larger than life personality and an even larger talent Kenny Wesley “The Soulful Nerd” is surely a force to be reckoned with. Honing his skills internationally and influencing the world one man at a time, I present my Kenny Wesley experience.
His passion and drive are easy to notice. His demeanor and stature are strong and confident, which is a direct reflection of his music. While at his show that took place at the Howard Theatre, I was not sure what to expect. I am a lover of the arts and have a very strong appreciation for music. I remember having such an urgent feeling while waiting for Kenny to come out for his set. I knew based off of his music and videos that I saw on YouTube that I was in for a treat. Finally, the lights dimmed and on the stage at his piano was Kenny Wesley. His immediate stage presence was strong. As soon as it was show time much to my anticipation Kenny belted out some of the most beautiful and ear capturing notes that I had ever heard. I must admit during his set I knew then that I was in store for a great interview.
Upon first glance I noticed that Kenny was sitting at a piano and he could not stay still. In my mind, I knew it was that he wanted to walk the stage from left to right in order to bond more with the crowd. As the show progressed he played and played the piano and sang in such a tune that was so perfectly timed that it almost seemed impossible. While playing the piano I could see the excitement on his face that conveyed just how much he was in a state of euphoria. He was definitely in love with what he was doing at that very moment. The sound was unique and as Kenny stated “Traveling around the world will give you more to sing about and to appreciate”. When describing his influence Kenny attributed his sound to culture and life.
His energy and positivity were even bigger than his personality. During the interview Kenny Wesley had this smile that made everyone in the room comfortable. I immediately had to point out that the way he was able to hold such beautiful notes while having feedback from the microphone was not easy and I had a deeper respect for his craft. “I really don’t have a choice, I don’t use an ear piece and have conditioned myself to concentrate on just the music”.
Humble, cultured and centered seemed to be the keys to his success. When I told Kenny that the crowd was captivated, he was in shock. I knew then that, Kenny Wesley had the makings and the drive of someone that knows what they want and will get it off his natural talent as well as self-created positive energy. This “Soulful Nerd” as he is and has been called is a “Breath of Fresh Air” and a true artist in every since of the word.
