Gotcha Matcha

Posted March 28, 2016 by qotsm in Health & Fitness

Have you been searching for an alternative to your caffeine fix? If so, go get yourself some matcha (mah-cha). Matcha is a powdered form of steamed and dried green tea leaves. For centuries, it has been used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It tastes like a bolder, grassier, brighter version of standard, store bought, green tea, in bags.

Matcha is extremely healthy. In one study, just one serving of matcha was found to have 137 times more epigallocatechin (ECGC) – disease fighting polyphenols than 10 cups of regular green tea. This stuff is powerful. I predict that before long, this will be added to the list of superfoods.

So, what other benefits does one get from indulging in a cup daily?

WEIGHT LOSS: ECGC has been shown to increase metabolism and in some studies, may stop the growth of new fat cells. Although more studies are needed to validate the results in humans, the research is promising. And, the fact that drinking green tea as opposed to sugary, calorie-laden drinks, will help save calories. Did you know that Starbuck’s uses matcha in their green tea latte? Just opt for skim milk, instead of whole.

FIGHTS DISEASE: Because of the concentrated levels of antioxidants in matcha, its disease fighting benefits are hard to beat. It has been proven to benefit almost every organ system in the body. It is cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-obesity, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, anti-artherogenic, liver protective and healthy for blood vessels. As you can see, it packs a powerful and healthy punch.

NO ENERGY CRASH: Just one serving of matcha has less caffeine than an espresso. Its nutrient makeup, is from where you obtain your energy. Because the tea leaves used to make matcha are protected from sunlight before being harvested and steamed, the leaves retain much of their natural chlorophyll (which is why matcha is so vibrantly green), a substance shown to help boost energy. In addition, green tea is an excellent source of L-theanine, a mind-calming amino acid, which means you will feel more alert and awake, without the late-afternoon caffeine crash. I often recommend my clients have a cup of matcha, instead of a cup of coffee, to fend off that energy crash, in the afternoon.

When buying Matcha, be sure you look for a high quality brand with the most health benefits. Stay away from products that have additives and sugars, which some contain.

For the perfect cup, heat water to about 180 degrees and whisk the powder in a “M” or “W” motion, and enjoy!
