There are so many themed styles to use for decorating your home. Modern, classic, country and even eclectic, the hardest part of decorating is deciding on a style that suits you. In today’s trending styles, what’s old is new. From interior design, fashion or technology products, it seems a little retro style is hot! In this modern world filled with cold technology and so many impersonal ways of communicating, a bit of retro can be a refreshing artifact.

Retro styled décor is primarily design ideas from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. Mixed styles of furniture, bulkier cabinetry, bolder colors, large floral prints and unusual design lines are all symbols from these eras. When many people think of these eras for decorating they envision the shag rugs, the avocado green appliances and the over sized television in the large cabinet. The purpose of retro décor is not to overwhelm the room but to set a theme or to add visual interest. If done correctly, these items can add just the right amount of visual interest.

If you are considering following the retro trend to decorate your living spaces you don’t have to transform your entire home back to the 1970’s. Newly manufactured products are being designed to look modern yet with a retro twist. After deciding on the main style for the living space, you can add a few authentic retro pieces. These retro pieces have a way of bringing back memories of childhood and simpler times. It can spark a bit of nostalgia and invoke conversations from your visitors when they view the pieces on display.

Where can you find authentic retro pieces? Almost anywhere! Your local neighborhood thrift store, second hand boutiques, items placed for curbside pickup or even in your family’s attic or storage space. Many of these items are in fairly good condition. A few bumps and dings only add character to the item. Some items may need a little cosmetic work but even those pieces can be noteworthy. A fresh coat of paint and some new hardware can make an outdated piece come alive. Once you have these conversation starters, you need to place them where they will be seen.

No matter where the item was originally purposed for, be sure to give it a place of honor. Do not store it away in a cabinet where it is only seen when you open the door. If it is in a cabinet, be sure it has a view to be seen. Coffee tables, side tables, wall niches, bookcases and shelves are very good places for show pieces. Anywhere you can think of that will allow you and your guests to see your unique style of decorating will give you pleasure in the amount of memories and conversation sparked by this old but new retro style.
